New Home for Southern Oral History Program

the James Lee Love House, future home of SOHP

In the spring of 2007 the SOHP relocated from its longtime quarters in Hamilton Hall to the Love House and Hutchins Forum, which now serves as the home of UNC's Center for the Study of the American South, of which the SOHP is a component program.

The James Lee Love House, situated at 410 E. Franklin St., was built c. 1887 by Carolina mathematics professor James Lee Love and his wife, June Spencer Love, for themselves and her mother, Cornelia Phillips Spencer. The renovated and expanded facility was rechristened the Love House and Hutchins Forum at grand opening ceremonies in April 2007. Glenn Hutchins, co-founder and managing director of Silver Lake Partners of New York City, made a major gift in support of the building renovation and expansion to honor his late father, James Hutchins, who studied with the Carolina sociologist Howard Odum at UNC.

This beautiful facility greatly enhances the SOHP’s ability to serve UNC and the public, while solidifying Carolina's longtime role as the world's leading institution for research, teaching, and public dialogue on the history, culture, and contemporary experience of the South. We hope you will find an opportunity to visit us soon!
